<image:title>News & Happenings - Congrats to Dame Ames Sheldon! - Congrats to Minnesota Dame Ames Sheldon on winning the Firebird Book Award for Current Events for her latest novel, Lemons in the Garden of Love.</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s a timely story of the fight for reproductive rights for women framed in an engaging novel featuring characters Cassie Lyman, a graduate student in the 1970s, and her great aunt Kate Easton, a suffragist. Ames based Kate, the inspiration for graduate student Cassie, on her grandmother’s aunt, Blanche Ames, a passionate women’s rights advocate. Ames’ first historical novel, Eleanor’s Wars, won the 2016 Benjamin Franklin Gold Award for Best New Voice: Fiction. Her second historical novel, Don’t Put the Boats Away, was finalist in historical fiction for the 2019 Best Book Awards. She will be speaking to our group in September. In the meantime, you can listen to some recent podcasts and find more information on her upcoming talks here.</image:caption>

<image:title>Historical Activities - History Day in Minnesota</image:title>
<image:caption>History Day is an annual competition for students in grades 7-12 to create projects - posters, papers, dramatic presentations, videos and more - that hone their research skills. Each year, the contest has a different theme. Students judged to have the best projects advance to the national competition in Washington DC. NSCDA-Minnesota has supported History Day financially for seven years, and provides at least two judges for the prize we sponsor each year. Minnesota Dames can volunteer to judge winners for our prizes.</image:caption>

<image:title>Patriotic Service - International Student Scholarships</image:title>
<image:caption>Minnesota Dames have provided scholarships to international students at the University of Minnesota for more than 65 years. The Minnesota Dames Patriotic Service Committee is unique among NSCDA state societies. Ours is the only state society that supports a program for foreign students to promote international exchanges and person-to-person diplomacy. The International Student Scholarship Program at the University of Minnesota manages the program in partnership with the Dames. Learn more here. Dames can log in to learn about our scholarship winners here. The Colonial Dames' Scholarship Fund continues to help bridge the gap between students having the talent to attain a dream and the financial means to make it a reality. Our scholarship program often is the difference that allows international students to remain at the University of Minnesota and finish their advanced degrees. These students then go on – either in the U.S. or around the world – to make important contributions and spread American values and ideals they learned in Minnesota. This scholarship is legislated to be matched one-to-one by the University of Minnesota, allowing our contributions to go farther and help more students to achieve their dreams. Above, students, Dames and University of Minnesota staff tour Historic Fort Snelling.</image:caption>

<image:caption>NSCDA has made a nationwide commitment to involvement with the Library of Congress Veterans History Project. Minnesota Dames have conducted five interviews that are currently on the Library of Congress Veterans History Project web page. If you are or know a veteran who would like to be interviewed, please contact us. Dames societies also spearhead service projects across the U.S., including support for Veterans Administration hospital patients, packages and letters for active duty military, USO airport lounges, and more. In Minnesota the Dames collect and donate items needed by Minnesota Veterans Home residents.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Sulgrave Manor (right) located in Sulgrave, near Banbury, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom, is the home of George Washington's English ancestors. Built by Lawrence Washington in 1539, Sulgrave Manor is a wonderful example of a sixteenth-century English manor house and garden. It is open to the public. NSCDA-MN currently has an Associate Trustee serving Sulgrave Manor.</image:caption>
